VW ID. Buzz named ‘Icon of the Year’

There are ‘positive vibes only' with the Volkswagen ID. Buzz - after the electric head-turner was named ‘Icon of the Year’ at the GQ Car Awards 2023.

For the first time in the awards’ 15 year history, this year saw the GQ team setting out to exclusively celebrate electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids, as opposed to traditionally-fuelled motors.

And it was the ‘feel good’ ID. Buzz - which is available to lease as either a five-seat MPV or Cargo panel van - that really caught the judges’ eyes.

Commenting on the award, GQ said:

VW has had a hankering to reimagine the original Type 2 van for the past 20 years and the end result is the ID. Buzz. Filing under 'original, eye-catching and dope,' the elevated driving position and minimalist cockpit make it a breezy place to sit. Plus, with its bright colour options, planet-protecting EV ethos and unconventional design, it emits an aura that’s nothing short of 'positive vibes only' with a hippie aesthetic. We (peace and) love it.”

In love bus MPV form, the ID. Buzz boasts very decent power of 204 bhp and a range of up to 258 miles between charges.

The ID. Buzz Cargo van (below), meanwhile, has the same power and range between charges but also adds a healthy payload of 607 kg as well as enough loading space to swallow two Euro pallets.

Kate Thompson, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said:

“We are delighted that the team at GQ have selected the ID. Buzz as the winner of this fantastic award, due to its positive sustainability elements and design features. As our first all-electric van, the ID. Buzz represents a major milestone in Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ electrification journey. The ID. Buzz is a product that is reminiscent of the renowned Volkswagen aesthetic, combined with futuristic technology and green credentials, producing an icon fit for the electric age.”

Elsewhere at the GQ Car Awards 2023 the electric Hyundai Ioniq 6 (below) was crowned ‘Saloon of the Year’, with the magazine’s judges praising it for possessing a ‘distinctive and daring architecture with a futuristic, high-tech, pure-electric twist’.

The Renault 5 Electric (below) was handed the ‘Prototype of the Year’ gong.

The 820 bhp plug-in hybrid Ferrari 296 GTB Hybrid (below) took home the ‘Hybrid Supercar of the Year’ silverware.

Meanwhile the sumptuous Lotus Eletre (below) was named ‘SUV of the Year’.

Speaking about the Lotus Eletre, GQ said:

“A little under two tonnes, with 600hp, it has a mileage that’ll just about get you from London to Paris (range is 300-plus miles). Plus, it actually looks like a Lotus.”

We decided after 5 years of leasing with another company to step away and try somewhere else. From the first google search to finding Select Car Leasing to engaging straight away on calling up with Danny Cutmore, I must say our experience has been beyond positive. Phone calls always answered or promised phone calls received, email responses and queries answered to help us find the best deal and all in a timely manner. Danny’s customer service is brilliant and I would highly recommend to anyone that calls, ask for Danny. Whilst we are still awaiting the delivery of our car over the coming months, I am hoping that the positive experience so far will continue down the line. Thank you so far to Danny and Select Car Leasing.
