Who said affordable estates had to be boring?
Check out the all-new Astra Sports Tourer, a brilliantly-styled load lugger from Vauxhall that comes with an enormous 548 litre boot.
Vauxhall has been winning plaudits for its car design in recent days, with its Mokka SUV crossover scooping the Design of the Year gong at the 2021 TopGear.com awards.
And the new Astra Sports Tourer is similarly pleasing on the eye, building on the appeal of the regular Astra hatchback and adding bundles of practicality.
The big rivals to the Astra Sports Tourer are the Ford Focus Estate and Skoda Octavia Estate - both of which have slightly larger amounts of luggage space. But there’s no denying the Astra’s appeal when it comes to how it looks, and there’s a great array of powertrains, too.
The one you’d arguably want is the plug-in hybrid variant, which has power of 225 PS and should return close to 250 mpg. It’ll be quick, too, accelerating from 0-62mph in around 8 seconds.
But there are regular petrol and diesel engines, too, with power ranging from 110 PS to 130 PS. A six-speed gearbox is standard on the petrol and diesel power units, while plug-in hybrid variants come standard with Vauxhall’s smooth eight-speed automatic.
Style wise, Vauxhall says its new Astra Sports Tourer is the first estate to carry it’s new ‘bold and pure design philosophy’. You get the ‘Vizor’ front end, LED headlights, while at the back you’ll find vertically aligned, high-mounted brake lights.
Step inside the cabin and lease customers will enjoy a 10-inch driver instrument cluster and a 10-inch digital touchscreen while there’s all the phone connectivity associated with modern cars.
In practical terms, when the 40:20:40-split rear seats are folded, the floor is completely flat - making it easier to load long and bulky items. Even with its underfloor lithium-ion battery, the plug-in hybrid variant offers cargo volumes of 548 litres with the seats up, and 1,574 litres with them folded down.
Meanwhile Vauxhall is confident the Astra Tourer is built to offer ‘unrivalled comfort for drivers’, with ultra-ergonomic front seats designed for long hauls.
The Tourer also makes use of what Vauxhall calls an ‘Intelli-Space’ - which could prove a lifesaver in the event of a breakdown.
A Vauxhall spokesperson explains:
“Intelli-Space can make life easier in the event of a flat tyre. The kits for tyre repair and first aid are stored in clever underfloor compartments that can be accessed from the boot or rear passenger seating area. This means that the kits can be reached without needing to fully unpack the boot.”
Vauxhall will open the order books for the All-new Astra Sports Tourer early next year.
