Suzuki teases new electric Jimny

Suzuki is plotting a heroic return for its Jimny SUV - this time as a fully-fledged electric vehicle.

The story of the most recent Suzuki Jimny is an interesting one indeed - and it’s also a tale that has turned the Jimny into a cult superstar.

The fourth generation Jimny was launched back in 2019, and instantly won hordes of admirers thanks to a style overhaul that had it looking like a mini Mercedes-Benz G Wagon.

It was also an instant award-winner - but there was trouble afoot.

The Jimny had a relatively high CO2 output and when EU emissions standards were tightened, the boxy off-roader was withdrawn from the European market completely in 2020.

It means that Jimnys are now highly-desirable. The entry-level Jimny cost from £15,500 to buy outright in 2019… but it’s not hard to find used examples now costing almost £30,000 - that’s a doubling in price in a matter of years, purely because of how few examples there are to enjoy.

So, when you consider the demand, you can see why Suzuki is eager to return the Jimny to its model range.

The reveal about the potential Jimny EV has come in a new ‘Growth Strategy’ briefing document from Suzuki.

The Japanese firm talks about a manufacturing philosophy of ‘Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi’ - or ‘Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, Beauty’ in the run up to 2030.

A Suzuki spokesperson adds:

“In Europe, we will introduce battery EVs in FY (financial year) 2024, expand to SUVs and Bsegments, with 5 models to be launched by FY2030.”

Suzuki also shared some silhouetted images of the five models they plan to launch. And if you look top right, you’ll see the unmistakable shape of the Jimny staring right back at you.

There’s also a super-dinky battery powered ‘Kei’ car in the works, too, with ‘Kei’ being the word Japan uses for nimble, urban microcars.

At present, there’s no fully-electric vehicle in the Suzuki range.

There are, however, mild hybrids and full hybrids, as well as a plug-in hybrid in the form of the Suzuki Across SUV.

If you’re looking for a compact, all-wheel drive model from Suzuki while you wait for the Jimny EV to launch, it’s well worth taking a look at the petrol powered Ignis(below).

The ‘ALLGRIP’ model is 4x4, it’s extremely easy on the eye - just like the Jimny - and it’s powered by a 1.2 litre petrol engine that’ll return up to 52.4 mpg.
