Porsche ‘Vision 357’ unveiled

If Porsche’s engineer, Ferdinand ‘Ferry’ Porsche, designed a new car from scratch today, what would it look like..?

Well, according to Porsche, it might look something like this - the ‘Vision 357 - which pays homage to the first ever Porsche sports car and which might also signpost future vehicles yet to come.

Porsche is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.

And the first proper Porsche sports car to be given a ‘general operating permit’ was the ‘356 No. 1 Roadster’, which arrived in June 1948.

Porsche, founded by Ferdinand Porsche Snr in the 1930s, had already been around for a good few years by then.

But, up until this point, the firm had only ever acted as manufacturing consultants and developers for other organisations - most notably with Volkswagen for the Beetle - and had never actually built its own cars.

All that changed in 1948 when Ferry Porsche, Ferdinand Senior’s son, decided to build his own motor - because he couldn’t find anything he actually wanted to buy.

So, the 356 was born - the very first car built by the Porsche brand. By 1965 Porsche had shifted some 78,000 units of the 356 in all sorts of guises.

And this new Porsche Vision 357 pays homage to the 356 while putting a unique new modern twist on things.

Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche, says:

“We created a very special birthday present in the form of the Porsche Vision 357, one which uses the 356 as a basis to underscore the significance of our design DNA.
“The design study is an attempt to combine the past, present and future with coherency, featuring proportions that are reminiscent of its historical archetype and details that visualise the outlook for the future.”

If it were to be built, the mid-engined Vision 357 would feature a naturally-aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine with power of 500 PS, and which runs on ‘e-fuels’ that are produced from renewable energy.

The Vision 357 also has a lot in common with the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS - which you can lease with Select Car Leasing.

Porsche adds:

“Like the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the Porsche Vision 357 has process air intakes positioned high behind the driver- and passenger-side windows, which designers adorned with comic-style ‘Air’ decals.”

The Vision 357 is being shown-off at a special exhibition - ‘Driven by Dreams. 75 years of Porsche sports cars’ - in the ‘DRIVE. Volkswagen Group Forum’ in Berlin, Germany.
