New MG5 EV Long Range Revealed

If you’re looking for an affordable, all-electric family estate, this new MG5 EV could well be the answer to your problems.

An MG might not be the first name on your lips when you’re looking for a lease deal but you overlook the Chinese-owned manufacturer at your peril.

Last year the firm was named ‘Best Value Brand’ at the Auto Trader New Car Awards. And in May this year the MG ZS SUV not only scooped the ‘Best Value New Car Award’ from Auto Trader, it was also named the best vehicle for dog owners.

Now MG has revealed a new and updated version of its MG5 EV station wagon - the Long Range - which has boosted the distance you can cover between charges from around 214 miles to 250 miles during normal day-to-day driving.

That figure rises to an impressive 334 miles if the car is used solely for ‘urban driving’.

The longer range MG5 EV will take an 80% charge in just 61 minutes on a 50kW rapid charger, or 40 minutes on a 100kW rapid charger. Meanwhile a 100% over night fast charge takes approximately 9.5 hours on a domestic home charger supply.

And despite those great stats, the MG5 EV costs just £26,495 on-the-road, which will translate to some extremely tempting lease offers.

So, what will the MG5 EV be like to drive?

First thing to note is that it’s pleasingly sprightly.

Power comes via a 115kW electric motor - equivalent to 156 PS - giving acceleration of 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds, and developing 260Nm of torque.

It’s also really well specced from standard. The MG5 EV Long Range gets MG’s ‘Pilot Driver Assistance System’ - a comprehensive suite of driver assist technologies. That includes Active Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Traffic Jam Assist, High Beam Assist and Intelligent Speed Limit Assist.

And MG is also confident that MG5 EV has great handling, too, thanks to a water-cooled battery pack that sits low in the car’s chassis, giving it an extremely low centre of gravity.

Step inside the cabin and you’ll enjoy an eight-inch colour touchscreen with smartphone mirroring capability, compatible with both Android Auto TM and Apple CarPlay.

Another great selling point for the MG5 EV is its massive boot - all 578 litres of it - which is a shade larger than the Ford Focus Estate.

In terms of gadgets, it gets a six-speaker 3D audio system, a DAB radio, 4 USB ports, electric windows all-round, air conditioning, regenerative braking, an auto-hold electric parking brake, rain-sensing wipers and push-button starter, all as standard equipment.

David Pugh, MG Motor Marketing Director, said:

“With MG5 EV we’ve already proven that there’s huge demand for a sensibly priced all-electric station wagon and it has proven hugely popular with fleet and retail customers alike since its debut in autumn 2020.
“With the new longer-range model we’re offering MG customers even greater value and flexibility form their EVs. With a full charge given a WLTP-approved range of 250 miles and the ability to be rapid charged to 80% in as little as 40 minutes, the MG5 EV is a car that really can bring electric motoring to the masses, and it has played a big part in MG’s rapid charge ahead as one of the leaders in the UK EV market.”

The MG5 EV Long Range is available to order now.
