Everything you need to know about the new MG4 EV

Here’s the first look at the upcoming MG4 EV - a new all-electric hatchback from MG that looks to be a real design departure for the British-Chinese manufacturer.

MG is on something of a roll right now.

The firm has really captured the attention of customers on a budget who are looking to drive an affordable EV. You can already enjoy the MG5 estate or the MG ZS SUV - both award winners in their categories.

And now this compact MG4 family car will also enter the fray when it launches in September this year.

The first thing you need to know about the MG4 is that it’s going to utilise brand new battery-electric underpinnings - something MG is calling its ‘Modular Scalable Platform’, or ‘MSP’, architecture.

It’s a system MG is going to be relying-on heavily in the future, as it looks to unveil several new cars that also share the MSP - ‘from hatchbacks to SUVs and sports cars’.

It’s a rear-wheel drive platform which allows for a 50:50 weight distribution for optimum handling, and MG says the system has also been developed with battery efficiency in mind.

As such, the new MG4 will be available with either a 51kWh or 64kWh battery, which translates to a range between 218-281 miles.

David Allison, Head of Product & Planning at MG Motor UK, said:

“The MG4 EV is a key part of the next phase of growth for MG. Our new MSP architecture will enable us to offer multiple options for the rapidly expanding UK electric car market, with all choices reinforcing our reputation for outstanding design, market-leading technology, and excellent value for money.”

Interestingly, this new MG platform will also allow for ‘battery swap’ capabilities in the future - which could be a key selling point should people wish to upgrade to larger batteries without actually having to swap their car.

It’ll also allow for over-the-air software updates throughout its entire lifecycle, ensuring it keeps up with the competition in what is a fast-paced and ever-changing EV environment.

Of course, the other really intriguing element of this announcement is how MG has referred to ‘sports cars’ when talking about what the MSP might be used for.

Before being reborn in the Noughties, MG produced some iconic little sports cars, including the MG F and the MG TF from the late 90s and early 2000s.

Could we be about to see a return to those two-seat roots - in a move fans have been clamouring for? Watch this space.

Further details of the MG4 EV will be announced in the coming weeks.
