Mercedes-AMG drops production version of 1063 hp ‘ONE’ hybrid hypercar

Here you have it - the F1-inspired Mercedes-AMG ONE is going into full production.

And we’ll let the stats for this out-there hybrid hypercar do the talking for it.

Power is a colossal 1063 hp. Mercedes-AMG has pilfered tech from Formula One to take that power from the race track to the road.

Top speed is capped at 218mph. It’ll hit 62mph from a standstill in 2.9 seconds. And it’ll then reach 124mph in an astonishing 7.0 seconds.

And yet despite all of that explosive performance, Mercedes-AMG says the ONE will still be capable of returning around 32.4 miles to the gallon.

The price tag for the ONE? An estimated £2.2m apiece, with all 275 planned production models already bagsied by potential owners.

Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG, says:

“With the Mercedes-AMG ONE, we have more than pushed the envelope. The immense technical challenges of making a modern Formula 1 powertrain suitable for everyday road use have undoubtedly pushed us to our limits. Over the duration of the development period, many may have thought that the project would be impossible to implement. Nevertheless, the teams in Affalterbach and the UK never gave up and believed in themselves.”

As Schiemer touches upon here, the ONE has endured a rough ride from conception to completion.

The project began back in 2017, when the ONE was conceived to celebrate 50 years of AMG. The stripped-back two-seater was built to house the same 1.6-litre, turbocharged V6 hybrid petrol engine as the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team race car.

But still took a further four years of testing to get to this point, with some suspecting Mercedes-AMG were slightly bonkers in even trying to attempt it.

That relatively tiny 1.6 litre engine is supplemented by four electric motors, and the powertrain is mated to a fully variable all-wheel drive system. Hybrid power drives the rear wheels, electricity alone features at the front. And you can also drive the ONE using electricity alone, for a limited distance of around 15 miles.

When it comes to the electric motors, you’ll find one on the crankshaft, two on the front axle, and one on the turbocharger for added oomph.

With all that grunt, sophisticated torque vectoring is the order of the day to keep the rubber on the Tarmac, while energy recuperation from the braking means it should be everyday usable.

The battery, again relatively small, is a 8.4 kWh unit that’s also used in the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E PERFORMANCE. And because the ONE weighs just 1,695 kg, it’s more than enough to propel it towards the horizon.

Charging wise, as well as the energy recuperation, there’s also an integrated 3.7 kW on-board system to top-up the battery.

There are a host of settings that can be adopted. The most gnarly is ‘Strat 2’, which is to be used on the track only, and deploys active aerodynamics, super-firm suspension tuning, and lowers the ONE by 37 mm at the front and 30 mm at the rear.

The shift rods and the 4-disc carbon-fibre clutch are hydraulically controlled while a high-strength carbon-fibre monocoque shell makes things uber taut.

And, of course, a carbon-fibre ceramic high-performance composite brake system is used for stopping.

As for how the ONE looks, Mercedes-AMG boasts about a ‘wasp waist and a wide tail’, which pretty much says it all.

A spokesperson adds:

“Even the basic body has been aerodynamically designed for maximum downforce and balance. And this move has been a successful one: the Mercedes-AMG ONE generates downforce from as low as 50 km/h, which becomes increasingly stronger as the speed increases.”

The cabin is also more plush than you might expect, coming with air con and a fully-connected infotainment system.

If you’re lucky enough to have one on order, enjoy!

First time for car leasing and looking back at the process, everything went smoothly. Quite a lot of paperwork to sign before getting a delivery date but i suppose it’s all part of the course. David Harding was very helpful from start to finish and helped me with all the questions that i had. I can’t speak highly enough of David. The car was delivered by a very helpful and pleasant man ( Jim ) , who showed me all that i needed to know about the car. I would recommend select car leasing for all aspects and i have no negatives .
