Impressive range revealed for Hyundai Ioniq 6

The electric range for the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 6 has now been revealed - and it’s news that’ll concern Tesla.

The Ioniq 6 was unveiled at the end of June, and prior to this week’s announcement we already knew that it was a radically-designed car inspired by super-aerodynamic ‘streamliner’ planes and trains from the 1930s.

And now we know what’ll be powering the Ioniq 6.

There will be an entry-level 53-kWh standard battery that should prove affordable.

But there will also be a long-range 77.4-kWh battery that can be had in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configuration, and which can travel up to 379 miles between charges.

To put that into perspective, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range, one of our top 10 longest range electric cars of 2022, can manage 374 miles before you need to stop and plug in.

The Ioniq 6 will have power of up to 325 PS and 605 Nm of torque which translates to a 0-62mph time of 5.1 seconds.

How does that stack up against the Model 3? Well, the Tesla wins here.

The Model 3 Long Range has power of 434 hp and can hit 62mph in just 4.4 seconds. The Model 3 Performance, meanwhile, has power of 554 hp and can do the 0-62mph sprint in a shade over three seconds.

You might also judge the Ioniq 6 against the all-electric Mercedes-Benz EQE saloon. The Ioniq 6 is likely to be cheaper than the £73,000 EQE, but it’s a good comparison point. The EQE has power of up to 292 hp and a range of up to 384 miles.

So, apart from the powertrain, what else do we now know about the Ioniq 6?

Firstly, an extra long 2,950mm wheelbase makes the cabin of the Ioniq 6 properly versatile.

Hyundai’s Thomas Schemera says:

“The innovative interior is meticulously thought out as a cocoon-like personal space, enhanced with the latest technologies to create a safe, fun, and stress-free driving experience. The spacious interior, with sustainability and usability at its heart, once again represents a step forward for electric vehicles, in line with the values of our customers.”

The Ioniq 6 gets the Hyundai ‘vehicle-to-load’ system, which lets you use the battery to charge other electric items - like camping gear or your laptop. It’s a feature you can also see in the award-winning Ioniq 5.

There’s a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, a top-notch sound system and all the phone connectivity you could ever need.

Meanwhile there’s a full suite of advanced driving assistance systems that unlock autonomous motoring.

So-called ‘Highway Driving Assist 2’ keeps you centred in your lane and maintains a set distance to the car in front. It can also change lanes for you for motorway bliss.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist can slam on the brakes if there’s a risk up ahead. Intelligent Speed Limit Assist can adjust the vehicle speed to match the speed limit so you never break the law.

Meanwhile the ‘Remote Smart Parking Assist 2’ can help park your car for you if you’re inside the vehicle, or you can use a remote control embedded in the key if you’re outside the vehicle.

You can also expect Tesla-like ‘over-the-air’ software updates so the tech in your Ioniq 6 never gets dated.

The Ioniq 6 is planned to begin production in the third quarter of 2022. The market launch schedule will be announced later.
