The innovative new Fisker Ocean SUV has scooped an international award for product design.
The Red Dot Design Awards, which originate in Germany, have been running since the 1950s and are prestigious indeed.
They’re decided on by a jury of more than 50 experts and cover pretty much anything you can think of - from architecture and furniture to electronic devices… and even cutlery.
And now the Red Dot team has given the seal of approval to the Fisker Ocean - which arrives in the UK this year - naming it ‘Best Electric Vehicle’.
Fisker says the Ocean’s attributes are ‘beautiful aesthetics, excellent function, ease of use’.
And the American firm’s Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker says:
“With this vehicle, we strived to create a well-balanced, sculptural surface that exudes a powerful road presence. Our goal for the Fisker Ocean was for everything about it – exterior, interior, and technology features -- to be simple, intuitive, and delightful."
This week the world’s attention turns to World Ocean Day, which shines a light on climate change and protecting the environment.
Fittingly, one of the key things about the Fisker Ocean is how it has been built with sustainability in mind.
It’s being manufactured at a carbon-neutral facility in Graz, Austria, and features an abundance of recycled materials. In fact, Fisker says 50 kg of reused materials goes into each Ocean SUV created.
CEO Fisker adds:
“We are particularly proud to win knowing Red Dot judged us on 'the quality of responsibility: is the product sustainable or durable?' We built our company to make the world's most emotional and sustainable vehicles. We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to move the world toward cleaner and more sustainable mobility, and every design choice Fisker makes supports that mission."
So, besides its eco credentials and how well it’s designed, what else can lease customers look forward to when the Fisker Ocean arrives officially in the coming weeks?
The first thing to learn is that the Fisker Ocean will be available in three trim levels.
The entry-level ‘Sport’ should be as affordable as the Volkswagen ID.3 while having power of 278 PS and a range of up to 273 miles between charges.
The mid-level Ocean Ultra has lots more power - at 543 PS - as well as a range of up to 379 miles between charges, which is comparable to the similarly-priced Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Meanwhile the range topping model is the all-wheel drive, dual motor Fisker Ocean Extreme. It’s the Extreme that’ll be available to lease first here in the UK.
And it’s a head-turning car indeed.
Fisker says it’ll have a ‘hyper’ range between charges of up to 440 miles, which is right up there with the very best in class, including the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV.
The Fisker Ocean launch model will be priced to buy from around £61,000, so you can expect similar leasing prices as the range-topping Tesla Model Y Performance or the Audi Q4 e-tron Quattro.
Like the Tesla Model Y Performance, the Fisker Ocean Extreme will also be absolutely rapid - with power of 558 PS propelling it from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds. That’s not quite as quick as the Model Y Performance, but plenty fast enough.
There are other nice touches, too.
The Fisker Ocean Extreme comes with the ‘SolarSky’ package - aka, a set of solar panels on the roof which can produce around 1,500 miles worth of energy when fully exposed to the sun. Fisker is, however, headquartered in California, USA, so let’s hope you can get similar results here in the UK.
You also get 22 inch alloy wheels and ‘vehicle to load’ capabilities - which allows you to use the battery in the Fisker Ocean as a mobile power source.
The Fisker Ocean isn’t available to lease just yet - but we’ll be sure to tell you when it is.
