Ex-premier league footballer and Soccer AM star Jimmy Bullard gives us his two pence on the full-electric Volkswagen ID.3, shows how easy it is to charge (If he can do it, anyone can - his words!), thinks about leasing one for his nipper, and chats driving range down at the driving range.
About the VW ID.3
Volkswagen says of its popular electric hatchback: “Smart, fun and good-looking. Yep, the ID.3 has it all.”
And from a leasing perspective, the ID.3 has been a smash hit since it first hit the market back in 2020.
It’s practical (roomier than a VW Golf), sensibly priced, and offers a healthy range of up to 370 miles between charges, depending on the model.
There’s even a sporty GTX variant, which boasts more aggressive exterior styling and which can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.7 seconds.
Why lease the VW ID.3?
With an affordable monthly lease price and practical features throughout, the VW ID.3 will appeal to busy families who need a capable daily driver.
All models are well equipped as standard, with entry-level variants coming with a 12.9-inch touchscreen, 10 colour ambient lighting, and safety tech that includes autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring.
Various battery sizes and trim levels help you tailor your VW ID.3 lease to your own precise needs.
Rapid charging at speeds up to 185 kW DC (on certain trims with the largest battery) can deliver a 10%-80% charge in around 25 minutes.

Volkswagen ID.3 Frequently Asked Questions
The ID.3 might not have a Volkswagen Golf badge, but there’s a lot of parallels between it and one of VW’s most famous creations. They’re both five-door family hatchbacks of about the same size, and from the same manufacturer. But VW decided to spin off an all-electric hatchback into an all-new model, and so the ID.3 was born. With more daring looks and several motor and battery options, it could be one of the main cars that brings electric driving well and truly into the mainstream.
Is an electric ID.3 more expensive to lease than a petrol or diesel Golf? Well, yes, but not by too much. And you stand to save a fortune in running costs, because electricity is much cheaper than regular fuel. You also stand to save with Select Car Leasing, because our market-leading connections to the automotive industry mean we can offer the most competitive leasing rates and special offers in the country. It’s hard not to keep coming back to the Golf as a comparison, but the ID.3 represents that same all-round appeal; it’s very good at lots of things. The electric power is the headline feature of this five-door hatchback, with several choices of battery and power for different budgets, performance and range. The range-topping VW ID.3 GTX Performance models enjoy power of 326 PS and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 5.6 seconds while also being capable of travelling up to 369 miles on a single charge.
The Volkswagen ID.3 was reviewed and tested by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP in 2019 and scored the maximum five stars. All models get an automatic emergency braking system that can recognise cyclists and pedestrians as well as other vehicles. You’ll also get a driver tiredness alert system, adaptive cruise control and Lane Assist, which warns you if you veer out of your lane unintentionally. From a practicality point, it’s actually better than the Golf in several ways. There’s more space inside, with plenty of room for five people and a flat floor to increase leg space in the back. The boot is almost exactly the same size as the Golf, which is to say decent, if not massive.
There's a good choice of powertrain and trim options with a VW ID.3 Lease. The latest entry-level 'Pro Essential' models get power of 204 PS and a 269-mile range, courtesy of a 58 kWh battery. You can also expect 18-inch alloys, a 12.9-inch infotainment display and safety systems such as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring to be fitted as standard. Range-topping ID.3 GTX Performance models offer pace alongside practicality, with power of 326 PS and a max 369-mile range.

VW ID.3 Frequently Asked Questions
The EV driving range of the VW ID.3 differs according to which powertrain and trim you choose. Entry level models (52 kWh battery) can travel around 241 miles between charges while those fitted with the larger 79 kWh unit can journey up to 370 miles. Real-world range depends on temperature, driving style and motorway use. Expect lower figures in winter or at sustained high speeds.
Charging speeds for the VW ID.3 depend on battery size:
52kWh: up to 145kW DC rapid charging
59kWh: up to 165kW DC
79kWh: up to 185kW DC
On a rapid charger, most versions can charge from 10–80% in around 25 minutes.
Using a home wallbox takes between 6:30 hours or 8:30 hours, depending on the model.
The VW ID.3 is rear-wheel drive (RWD). There’s no option of all-wheel drive, including with the performance GTX models.
Prices for the VW ID.3 typically start from around £30,860 (depending on offers and battery size), rising to over £46,000 for higher-spec GTX Performance versions.
Lease deals are available with Select Car Leasing and company-car drivers benefit from low Benefit-in-Kind (BiK) tax due to its zero-emissions status.
The VW ID.3 has a boot that measures 385 litres, which expands more than 1,250 litres with the rear seats folded flat. That’s competitive for the class but lags behind some key rivals, including the MG4 EV and Peugeot E-2008. The boot is, however, larger than that of the traditionally-fuelled VW Golf - and the cabin of the ID.3 is roomier than the Golf, too.
