About the Nissan Leaf

When the original Nissan Leaf first launched back in 2011, it blazed a trail as the UK’s first mass-market electric vehicle.

The mild-mannered hatchback of old has since been replaced by this, a practical, coupe-shaped SUV crossover that once again sets a benchmark for other rivals to meet.

The third-gen Leaf offers a class-leading range of up to 386 miles between charges and also comes with a wealth of features, including flush door handles, 3D rear lights, and a dimmable panoramic sunroof.

Rapid charging at up to 150 kW DC should also make the Nissan Leaf easy to live with.

Why lease a Nissan Leaf?

While the latest Nissan Leaf has a wheelbase that’s similar in size to its predecessor, it’s both wider and taller than the car it replaces - which means more room inside for occupants.

The exterior styling is easy on the eye, the driving performance is more dynamic than before, and the interior is both comfortable and more upmarket than the affordable leasing price might suggest.

You have a choice of two batteries; a 52 KWh unit and a larger 75 kWh powertrain, the latter which offers the 386-mile range.

The Leaf is also pacey, with models equipped with the larger battery able to accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds (with Sport mode engaged).

Nissan Leaf Frequently Asked Questions

The new Leaf offers two battery sizes: 52 kWh (Standard) and 75 kWh (Extended). The smaller of the two batteries enjoys a range of up to 271 miles while the Extended Range pack ups the range to around 386 miles.

For DC (rapid) charging, the maximum rate is up to 150 kW (for the Extended Range battery), which lets you recover the energy from 20-80% in less than 30 minutes. For slower or home charging, the Leaf supports 11 kW AC recharging.

Where the original Nissan Leaf was a traditional family hatchback, the third-gen Leaf adopts the silhouette of a taller SUV with a curvaceous ‘fastback’ rear. The aerodynamics have been improved with the addition of flush door handles, a smoother underbody, and a teardrop silhouette, which also boosts its efficiency. The interior now boasts more room for passengers as well as better tech, including Google systems automatically built into the infotainment system on some trims.

The Nissan Leaf offers surprisingly good performance. Models equipped with the larger battery can accelerate from 0-62mph in 7.6 seconds while even Standard Range versions of the Leaf can reach 62mph in 8.26 seconds. The 52 kWh motor is rated at about 174 hp and 345 Nm torque, the 75 kWh version has around 215hp and 355 Nm. Top speed for both is 99mph.

The Nissan Leaf’s 437-litre boot is down slightly for the class, with the Kia EV3 and Skoda Elroq having more luggage space. The Leaf does, though, provide a larger boot than the VW ID.3, which is another close rival. While the Leaf’s teardrop shape slopes towards the rear, Nissan says the general usability and rear headroom have not been compromised.
