Lepas is a sub-brand of Chinese giant Chery, falling under the same umbrella as marques like Jaecoo, Omoda and Chery UK.
And the Lepas L8 is a five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV that has been designed from the wheels up for Europe and enhanced for British roads.
As a so-called ‘D-Segment’ vehicle, it’s a mid-to-large SUV that’s a step up from the smaller Jaecoo 7 while falling somewhere between the Chery Tiggo 7 and Chery Tiggo 8.
Space in the back for passengers is one of the L8’s big plus points, with a 2,800mm wheelbase translating to just under a metre of rear legroom (970mm) for ‘limo-like levels of comfort’, says Lepas.
The name ‘Lepas’ is a portmanteau of the words ‘leopard’ and ‘passion’, and the car’s design philosophy has been inspired by its namesake big cat, from the feline-like haunches to ‘Leopard’s Eye’ lights.
A plug-in hybrid powertrain offers an electric range of up to 56 miles on a single charge while low CO2 emissions of 21g/km means the L8 is ultra-low emissions zone (ULEZ) compliant.
The Lepas L8’s 18.4kWh battery can be DC fast charged from 30% to 80% in as little as 20 minutes.
All models are generously equipped as standard, with the base trim boasting everything from a large 13.2-inch touchscreen with sat nav to a panoramic glass roof.

Yes. At launch, every Lepas L8 is powered by the LEPAS Super Hybrid System, which combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an 18.4kWh battery and electric motor. This allows many everyday journeys to be completed using electric power alone, while the petrol engine provides extended range for longer trips.
The Lepas L8 offers a WLTP electric-only range of up to 56 miles. With a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery, the combined driving range is up to 745 miles, making it suitable for both daily commuting and long-distance travel.
The Lepas L8 measures 4,688mm long, 1,871mm wide and 1,686mm high, with a 2,800mm wheelbase. It is larger than the Jaecoo 7 and Chery Tiggo 7, offering generous rear passenger space and a 507-litre boot. Its dimensions place it among the larger five-seat family SUVs on sale in the UK.
The Lepas L8 is manufactured by Chery Group, one of China's largest automotive manufacturers. Chery also owns the Omoda, Jaecoo and Chery brands, all of which are expanding rapidly across the UK and Europe.
The Lepas L8 competes with popular family SUVs including the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, MG HS Plug-in Hybrid, BYD Seal U DM-i and Mazda CX-5. It also offers a larger alternative to the Jaecoo 7 while sharing much of the same plug-in hybrid technology.
