About the Honda Prelude

Having been absent from Honda’s line-up for a quarter of a century, the sixth-generation Prelude made a glorious return to the market for 2026 - and it’s here to deliver the ‘joy of driving’ to a new generation of customers, according to the Japanese manufacturer.

With its design inspired by the aviation industry, particularly the simplicity of modern gliders, the Honda Prelude boasts a streamlined and aerodynamic exterior that’s sure to catch the eye.

A low stance and a suspension set-up borrowed from the all-conquering Honda Civic Type R also means the Prelude offers exceptional handling.

While nowhere near as potent as the now-discontinued Civic Type R, the Honda Prelude’s sophisticated ‘e:HEV’ full hybrid powertrain develops 184 PS and is also capable of returning a healthy 45 miles to the gallon, giving drivers the best of all worlds.

There are a number of technical innovations showcased with the Honda Prelude.

The coupe features Honda’s ‘S+ Shift’ system, which aims to replicate the sound and feel of a traditional manual gearbox. Shift down through the steering wheel paddles and you’ll hear rev-matching ‘blips’ while the Active Sound Control enhances the aural experience.

Power of 184 PS (courtesy of a 2.0-litre petrol engine and two electric motors) enables the Prelude to accelerate from 0-62mph in a respectable 8.2 seconds while an advanced multi-link suspension set-up, adaptive dampers and the latest generation of Honda’s Agile Handling Assist (AHA) tech ensures sporty handling.

There’s just one trim level - called ‘Advance’ - which comes loaded with equipment as standard, including a customisable 10.2-inch driver display and 9-inch infotainment touchscreen.

The latest variant of the Honda Prelude is the sixth-generation and it was first released in November 2025. The Prelude name dates all the way back to 1979 when it made its debut in the UK. 

The sixth-generation Honda Prelude uses an e:HEV powertrain which is a full hybrid and never needs to be plugged in to recharge. It mates a 2.0-litre petrol engine with a small battery (1.1 kWh) and two electric motors to produce power of 183 PS and 315 Nm of torque for a 0-62mph acceleration time of 8.2 seconds. 

No, the Honda Prelude is a direct-drive hybrid with an automatic gearbox. However, the Prelude features Honda’s ‘S+ Shift’ technology which replicates the sound and feel of a traditional manual gearbox, complete with a rev-matching throttle ‘blip’. It’s controlled via the steering wheel paddles, ordinarily used to control the level of regenerative braking when the S+ Shift is not engaged. This allows the driver to shift through the gears as per a manual transmission. 

The latest Honda Prelude is capable of returning up to 45.2 mpg, according to the WLTP test, and produces around 117g/km of CO2. 

The Honda Prelude is described as a ‘2+2’ coupe, which means the seats in the rear are somewhat smaller than with other, larger coupes. They are, however, fine for children and will accommodate smaller adults over shorter journeys. They also fold flat, increasing the available boot space from 269 litres to 663 litres.
