Most popular lease vehicles of 2022

The Nissan Qashqai SUV was the most popular lease vehicle among Select Car Leasing customers in 2022.

Last week the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed its annual list of the best-selling cars of 2022, putting the Qashqai in No.1 spot, ahead of the Vauxhall Corsa, Tesla Model Y, Ford Puma and MINI hatchback.

And we can now reveal that the affordable, dependable Qashqai also topped Select’s own lists, both for ‘Most Leased’ and ‘Most Enquired About’ motors of the year just gone.

Graham Conway, Managing Director at Select Car Leasing, commented:

“The Nissan Qashqai has long been one of our most popular lease cars, and it’s great to see the SUV topping both our Most Leased list as well as the SMMT’s Top 10 run-down of best-sellers.
“What’s great about the Qashqai, first and foremost, is that it’s affordable. Right now, we have lease deals on the Qashqai that are as low as £213 per month*. It’s also a cheap car to run, thanks to mild-hybrid and self-charging hybrid powertrains.
“And you’re getting a whole lot of car for your monthly lease fee. The Qashqai is spacious, well-equipped and the exterior styling is razor sharp.
“Best of all, it’s made right here in Britain, so it’s great to support our manufacturing industry.”

The runner-up in Select’s Most Leased run-down was the all-electric Tesla Model Y SUV (below) - a car that also came 3rd in the SMMT’s best-selling data.

And third place in the Select list went to the versatile Volkswagen T-Roc (below), which is also available as a super-rapid, 300 bhp 'R' hot-SUV.

Meanwhile 2022 saw a huge surge of interest in electric vehicles in general.

Battery-electric vehicles, or ‘BEVs’, now account for more than a fifth of all Select Car Leasing enquiries.

It means interest in EVs is now behind only petrol cars, and placed ahead of diesel, plug-in hybrid, and self-charging hybrid vehicles.

Select’s leasing stats tally closely with the retail industry data - with BEVs second in the list of best-selling type of car, behind petrol but ahead of mild-hybrid petrol, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles.

BEVs also saw a 40.1% increase in registrations compared with 2021, according to the SMMT figures.

David Lewis, Head of Electric Vehicles & Energy at Select Car Leasing, says lease customers are really starting to get the message when it comes to the benefits of EVs.

He says:

“There’s no two ways about it, electric vehicles represent the future of motoring, and it’s great to see so many lease customers enjoying cars like the Tesla Model Y and the Tesla Model 3 in 2022.
“The Kia Niro EV was also one of our most enquired about, and most leased, vehicles of 2022, and is still a highly-affordable leasing option.
“While there has been hesitancy about EVs in the past, it’s clear to see that a lot of the doubts associated with making the switch to plug-in power are now ebbing away.
“As we talked about throughout 2022, even with the rising cost of electricity, when you charge an EV at home you can save hundreds and hundreds of pounds on fuel compared with running a petrol or diesel car over the course of a year.
“Don’t believe us? Have a look at our fuel cost calculator, which is based on current, real-world prices and fuel economy figures.”

Away from traditional cars, the rugged Ford Ranger pick-up (above) was also one of the most enquired-about vehicles in 2022 here at Select Car Leasing.

Daren Jasper, Head of Commercial Vehicles at Select Van Leasing, says that one of the Ranger’s big strengths is that it’s perfect for both personal and business lease customers.

He adds:

“The benefits of a business having a pick-up are obvious.
“You get rugged dependability, all-wheel drive, a great payload, and excellent towing abilities.
“But pick-ups like the Ford Ranger also make fantastic vehicles for personal and leisure use. It’s why they’ve proved so popular here at Select Van Leasing.
“For a lot of customers, a pick-up beats an SUV when it comes to kit-carrying abilities. Just load up your mountain bikes and paddle boards and head away for a weekend of adventure!
“The Ford Ranger Raptor also has performance on tap, thanks to a 292 bhp V6 petrol engine.”
