New Inception EV signposts the future of Peugeot

Check out this new ‘Inception’ concept from Peugeot - a car the French firm says is a bold blueprint for the future of its electric vehicles.

The all-wheel drive Inception saloon is being shown-off this week at the glitzy Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, USA.

And from the razor-sharp rear end to the tablet-like steering wheel, the Inception begs to be stared at.

Its ultra-sleek, aerodynamic design is built to maximise both range and speed.

The Inception is powered by a large 100 kWh battery that gives it a whole heap of power - 680 hp - and it means a 0-62mph acceleration time that’s under three seconds.

Peugeot says the Inception also has a range of up to 497 miles on a single charge. And thanks to ultra-rapid charging capabilities, you can put 19 miles worth of energy back in the battery in just a minute, or 93 miles in five minutes.

Another nod to the future is the fact that the Inception can also be charged wirelessly, by induction, rather than needing a traditional plug and cable.

Peugeot says the inception introduces a new ‘simpler, more refined design’ which will ‘be introduced on future models from 2025’.

The distinctive Peugeot claw design is retained, while there’s an abundance of glass on the exterior to create an almost goldfish-bowl like capsule.

The Inception also uses sophisticated artificial intelligence so that it can recognise the driver as they approach the car.

It then makes sure all the personalised settings are up and running before you even set foot in it, including the seat, temperature and driving mode preferences.

Inside the cabin, the ‘Hypersquare’ steering wheel is a bold move, and is inspired by video game controllers.

It also incorporates steer-by-wire technology, which ditches the traditional physical connection between steering wheel inputs and how the car turns, and moves to a sensor-based digital system instead - like you see in motorsport vehicles.

A Peugeot spokesperson explains: “The centre of the Hypersquare is a tablet-type screen dedicated to the distribution of control information. The pictograms for the different features (air conditioning, radio volume, ADAS etc.) are displayed on the two side panels to facilitate access to the chosen control. The latter is located inside the circular recesses and can be accessed by moving the thumb only, without taking your hands off the steering control.”

The Hypersquare doesn’t sound like a flight of fancy, either, with Peugeot stating it hopes to see it in the firm’s range ‘before the end of the decade’.

The Peugeot spokesperson adds: “Featuring a revolutionary exterior and interior design, including the next-generation Peugeot i-Cockpit and innovative Hypersquare control system with steer-by-wire technology, the Inception concept will inspire Peugeot’s future products from 2025, with the goal of bringing most of its innovations to production.”
