Volkswagen is celebrating this week after a UK customer was handed the keys to the 10,000th Tiguan R produced worldwide.
The performance SUV has gone to retired British Airways employee Trevor Godfrey, 65, via his local retailer Marshall Volkswagen Gatwick.
And the occasion illustrates just how popular the Tiguan R - which sits between the T-Roc R and the full-fat Touareg R in the VW ‘R’ range - has become.
Speaking at the UK’s Brands Hatch race circuit in Kent - Peter Jost, Head of Marketing and Sales for Volkswagen R, said: “This is a big milestone for us, but it doesn’t come as a surprise. The Tiguan is already Volkswagen’s most successful SUV globally and this performance Tiguan R model has been incredibly popular. The UK is actually one of the biggest markets for Volkswagen R vehicles, so I’m glad the 10,000th Tiguan R has found a home here and I’m delighted for Trevor that he gets to experience what this car is truly capable of on a track – the place all Volkswagen R models are developed.”
So, what’s so enticing about the Tiguan R and why should you lease one?
Firstly, it’s quick. A four-cylinder 2.0-litre turbocharged engine generates power of 320 PS and is married to VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel drive alongside the ‘R-Performance Torque Vectoring’ system.
That torque vectoring wizardry sees a computer control how much power goes to each individual wheel, giving you maximum grip when you need it most.
Peak torque of 420 Nm means the Tiguan R can whip from 0-62 mph in just 4.9 seconds.
How does that stack up against rivals? The Audi RS Q3 (below) is more powerful at 400 PS and quicker off the mark, but is around five grand more expensive to buy outright than the Tiguan R.
The Cupra Ateca (below) is potentially more affordable than the Tiguan R, and despite making do with power of 300 PS has precisely the same 0-62 mph time as the VW at 4.9 seconds.
Meanwhile the entry-level Porsche Macan (below) - which is at a similar price point to the Tiguan R - lags behind the VW in terms of power, boasting 265 PS and a 0-62 mph sprint time of 6.4 seconds.
Yet there’s more to the Tiguan R than just pace.
The list of standard equipment is properly impressive, and includes 21 inch alloys, sporty exterior styling, heated front sports seats and a rear view camera.
There’s also a full suite of driver assistance and safety technology, including adaptive cruise control, adaptive chassis control, dynamic cornering headlights, a lane change assist system and autonomous emergency braking.
You can lease a Volkswagen Tiguan R with Select Car Leasing from around £525 per month*.
