Select provides three free cars to support charity's crucial work

Charity Sue Ryder has been handed the keys to three new vehicles that’ll be used by staff to continue caring for patients and families across South Oxfordshire.

The brand new cars - a trio of Audi A1s - have been supplied, free of charge, by Reading-headquartered Select Car Leasing.

They’ll be utilised by the team at Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire, based in Wallingford, which provides expert palliative care and support for local people living with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families.

The hub’s team of Sue Ryder nurses, doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, family support and befrienders provide a Hospice at Home service, Day Service and Care Coordination and Advice Line.

The Hospice at Home service sees Sue Ryder Nurses visit patients at their own home to deliver expert care and support to relieve physical symptoms and emotional distress, as well as advising the patient's family on how best to help care for their loved one. Assistance is also provided with personal care and repositioning.

On average, they make 19 home visits a day across South Oxfordshire, which equates to over 7,000 visits per year.

Sylvia Thomas, Head of Quality and Clinical Services, at Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire, thanked Select Car Leasing for making the vehicles available, saying:

“Sue Ryder’s aim is to be there when it matters for our patients at the most difficult times of their lives, and we’re so grateful to Select Car Leasing for playing such a crucial role in supporting us to achieve this.
“Throughout the day and night our Sue Ryder Nurses are travelling across South Oxfordshire to support to people in their own homes during their last weeks or days of life. Having access to the Select Car Leasing vehicles is absolutely pivotal in us being able to reach those patients and to provide the expert care they need.”

Sue Ryder operates seven hospices and palliative care hubs across the UK and in the Thames Valley region provides palliative care to local communities from Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire, Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading, Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub Berkshire in Newbury and Sue Ryder Wokingham.

Meanwhile Select Car Leasing’s relationship with Sue Ryder is long-standing, going back to 2014.

In 2019, Select donated three brand new Skoda Octavia cars to Sue Ryder in order to support staff across the Thames Valley in their daily activities. The new Audi A1 cars will replace the existing Skoda Octavias.

Tom Horsfield, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire, adds:

“We’re extremely grateful to Select Car Leasing for all its support and generosity over the years, and this is a relationship we truly value.
“The cars we’ve received are absolutely critical in our work to provide palliative care and support to a great many patients and their families.”

Select Car Leasing Company Director Mark Tongue has praised Sue Ryder for the ‘incredible’ work it does, and confirms his long-term commitment to the charity.

He added:

“We’ve been supporting Sue Ryder for eight years now, and we’re thrilled to be able to deliver three brand new cars to the team at Sue Ryder Palliative Care Hub South Oxfordshire.
“The work Sue Ryder does at both a national and local level is truly incredible, providing care and support for patients and their families when they absolutely need it most.
“It is a charity close to all of our hearts here at Select. Many members of staff have had loved ones receive care from Sue Ryder.”
“We’re proud to be able to assist Sue Ryder in this way and we look forward to many more years lending our support to the cause.”

The Audi A1 cars arrive at Sue Ryder with a warranty, road tax and full servicing. All three have also been given official Sue Ryder branding in order to help raise awareness of the charity’s work in the local area.

In May this year, Select raised more than £1,200 for the Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice after organising a charity football match at Reading F.C’s Select Car Leasing stadium.

The match was contested by two teams of Select staff members, captained by Directors Mark Tongue and James O’Malley.

Select Car Leasing was formed in 2004 and is the UK’s leading independent car and van leasing website, with a total fleet of over 60,000 vehicles and over 300 staff members nationally.
