New MINI Cooper Electric gets range boost

The MINI Cooper Electric is about to get a significant boost in range - because it’ll now be able to travel for up to 249 miles between charges.

The all-electric MINI Cooper was first launched in 2020 and while it’s heaps of fun to drive, the grown-up go-kart is far from being a motorway mile muncher. No, it's definitely more at home in the urban jungle.

Current models have a range of up to 145 miles between charges, courtesy of a 32.6 kWh battery.

The next-gen MINI Cooper Electric, however, will be a different kettle of fish.

Due to launch next year and seen here ahead of full production, the updated MINI Electric will be available with a choice of two batteries - a 40.7 kWh unit or larger 54.2 kWh alternative - which unlocks a range of between 186 and 249 miles between charges, depending on which one you go for.

That’s a very healthy upgrade for the plug-in MINI and will see it competing with the MG4 EV and the Volkswagen ID.3 in terms of distance.

The refreshed MINI should also go like the clappers.

The entry level E trim has power of 184 PS while the range-topping SE takes the power up to 217 PS. That’s a lot more than you get with the regular, 178 PS, petrol-powered MINI Cooper S, which is no slouch either.

A MINI spokesperson explains:

“It accelerates without delay and without shift interruptions. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery is installed in the floor of the MINI Cooper Electric for optimum road holding and weight distribution, while also increasing the vehicle’s stability and agility. In this way, MINI redefines the brand’s hallmark go-kart feeling, consistently perpetuating the concept of urban driving fun that has been so successful for more than 60 years.”

MINI’s parent company BMW has had a hand in the design of the new-look hatchback, with attempts to improve aerodynamics as well as ‘driving dynamics’.

There’s also an attempt to make the MINI Electric more practical, with the addition of a sliding back row of seats which means you can make more room in the boot.

The new MINI Cooper Electric is due to go into full production later this year, with the first cars arriving in 2024.

In the meantime you can lease a MINI Electric with Select Car Leasing from just £397 per month*.
