Maserati unleashes track-only version of MC20 supercar

More power, honed suspension and outlandish looks - ‘Project24’ could be the ultimate version of Maserati’s MC20 super sports car.

When the Maserati MC20 first launched last year, few people looked at the 630 hp mean machine and said, ‘You know what this thing needs? More power!’

The regular 3.0 litre V6 coupe is already capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in 2.9 seconds.

But now Maserati has upped the ante with this so-called ‘Project24’, which is essentially an MC20 in its most extreme form.

Don’t expect to tootle along to Tesco in it - Project24 is strictly for the track only.

New turbochargers mounted on the engine take power up to 740 hp, there’s a new suspension system working in tandem with carbon-ceramic brakes, and you can also expect slick racing tyres, too.

Maserati is also working hard to ensure Project24 remains light. The standard MC20 weighs-in at just 1,475 kg, Project24 sheds enough pounds to get down to 1,240 kg, giving it a power-to-weight ratio of 1.69 kg/hp.

A Maserati spokesperson adds:

“Designed by Centro Stile Maserati, the Project24 has a completely new look. This time, Maserati design pushes the boundaries to the limits, free of the constraints usually seen in a racing car.
“The result is something never seen before, combining beauty with genuine sporty capabilities to become an instant classic collector’s item.”

There’s no details yet on potential price, or when the Project24 might be available, and just 62 units will be built.

Maserati says it hopes the initiative will ‘raise the brand's unlimited performance to a new level of adrenaline on the track’.

What else can you expect with Project24?

It’ll have a roll cage, racing clutch and limited-slip self-locking mechanical differential and all-new carbon-fibre bodywork.

When it comes to the normal MC20 - a rival to the Ferrari 488 GTB and the McLaren Artura - it’s available as either the coupe or a ‘Cielo’ convertible.

What’s more, there’s also an all-electric MC20 ‘Folgore’ model on the way, a car Maserati has promised to deliver by 2025.

The MC20 Folgore could have power of up to 1,200 hp, judging by what the Italian firm has been boasting about, as well as an acceleration time likely to melt your face.

A Maserati spokesperson tells us:

“All Maserati models will come in a 100% electric version by 2025: the MC20 super sports car, the new Quattroporte sport sedan and the all-new full-size Levante SUV will complete the Maserati Folgore offering, to attract the new luxury consumer in all market segments.”
