Powerful Maserati Grecale compact SUV unveiled

Say hello to the Grecale - a stunning new compact performance SUV from Maserati, and a car that represents a real landmark for the Italian firm.

Maserati is on a mission to offer a 100% electric version of all of its models by 2025.

And that journey really does start here - because while the Grecale can be enjoyed with a meaty, traditional 3.0 litre V6 petrol engine, there’s also a distinct 'Grecale Folgore’ variant - which is 100% electric, using 400V technology, and is being lauded as Maserati’s first ever all-electric car.

The Grecale will sit a rung under the larger Levante SUV in the Maserati line-up, and should prove more affordable to lease. It also represents a real competitor to the Porsche Macan and the Audi SQ5.

A Maserati spokesperson describes it as ‘everyday exceptional’, and adds:

“Grecale strikes the right balance between versatility, elegance, performance and innovation, guaranteeing performance, comfort and safety, all at the same time. These features are combined with off-road capabilities and uncompromising driving pleasure.”

Let’s first have a look at the powertrains that’ll be available.

The ‘GT’ model will be powered by a four-cylinder mild hybrid engine capable of delivering 300 hp.

The mid-range ‘Modena’ will get a four-cylinder 330 hp mild hybrid engine.

Meanwhile the most-powerful ‘Trofeo’ will be equipped with a high-performance 3.0L 530 hp petrol V6 based on the Nettuno engine fitted to Maserati’s MC20 supercar. The Grecale Trofeo will be able to accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.8 seconds and then on to a top speed of 177 mph.

And, in a year’s time, the electric Grecale Folgore will also make its debut. Maserati isn’t going on record yet about how powerful that car might be, or what the range is, so we’ll keep you posted on that front.

When it comes to how the Grecale looks, the front features a low and imposing grille, the rear features boomerang taillights, while there’s a definite coupe-SUV flavour to the exterior in general.

Inside, in the cabin, the standout tech specs include a digital Maserati clockface, a large 12.3 inch central screen, another 8.8 inch display for extra controls, and a third screen for the passengers in the rear seats.

And lease customers will enjoy a state-of-the-art audio system, too.

The Grecale also gets Maserati’s cutting-edge Vehicle Domain Control Module (VDCM).

In layman’s terms, it’s powerful computer wizardry that works to vertical, lateral and longitudinal dynamics to maximise traction and performance, and makes subtle adjustments to the handling depending on the road as well as your driving style.

There’s no word yet on when the Maserati Grecale goes on sale but we’ll keep you in the loop.

Chris was great, very helpful and looked through lots of different options with me as I didn’t know which car I wanted. He looked over both new and used deals and he gave lots of advice, would definitely recommend!
