Top five ‘most remote’ electric vehicle charging points revealed

The top five most remote electric charging points in the UK have been mapped by Jeep - with one venue in the Highlands of Scotland proving the most isolated.

The good news for those living in England is that no matter where in the wilds you might be, even the most out-of-the-way charge point is only 46 miles from the nearest city or big town with more than 10,000 residents.

It’s even better news for those living in Northern Ireland - the most remote charging point there is only 26 miles from the nearest densely-populated place.

Jeep says its study should be welcomed by anyone who currently drives an electric vehicle (EV) or is thinking about getting one, adding that ‘while the majority of charge points are currently located in larger towns and cities, the network is gradually expanding to more remote areas in Britain.’

All in all, there are now more than 42,000 electric vehicle charge points located across the UK.

The Government, which recently axed the plug-in car grant, has promised to divert that money to improving the charging infrastructure. In its most recent update, it said it had ‘committed £1.6 billion to building the UK’s public chargepoint network’.

The ‘Remote Charge Point Index’ was created to celebrate the Jeep ‘4xe’ range including the brand new plug-in Grand Cherokee, Compass 4xe and Renegade 4xe.

Here’s the low-down on the top five most out-there charging spots:

Seaview Hotel, John o’Groats, Scotland (121 miles from Inverness)

Jeep also pointed-out that the Lochinver Community Hall chargepoint, 87 miles from Inverness, is well worth a road trip.

It said: “Lochinver has stunning mountain views, white sandy beaches and is also situated on the iconic driving route, the North Coast 500.

“Other sites in Scotland’s top five most remote charge points include Strathy Point Lighthouse on the very north coast of Scotland, the small fishing town of Scrabster, Thurso Castle, or if visitors wish to feel like they’re on the edge of the world, they can head to Farr Bay where they might catch sight of otters, seals or golden eagles.”

Etal Village Hall, North East England (46 miles from Ashington).

Jeep says: “If visitors want to explore the village, they will find the ruins of an old Medieval castle and Northumberland's only thatched pub. Other locations featured in the top five for road trippers to enjoy are Alwington, where visitors can tour the North Devon coastline, and the Yorkshire Dales to take in the scenic waterfalls at Aysgarth Falls National Park.”

Sunnysands Caravan Park, western edge of Snowdonia National Park, Wales (43 miles from Bangor)

Speaking about some of the other locations it surveyed, Jeep adds:

“For fans of the National Trust, Wales’ most remote charge point is located at Plas Yn Rhiw, a 16th century manor house (a few miles west of Abersoch). With an ornamental garden and coastal views of Porth Neigw, “Hell’s Mouth” bay guests can also venture through the small woodland located on the property.”

DRD Car Park Belleek, Northern Ireland (24 miles from Enniskillen)

Jeep says:

“Electric and plug-in hybrid drivers wishing to explore Northern Ireland can find its most remote charge point in Belleek, County Fermanagh. Bordering the Republic of Ireland, guests planning a road trip around the Emerald Isle can stop off and explore this quiet village famed for its pottery while re-charging.
“Other sites waiting to be explored close to the ‘remote’ charge sites include the southernmost town in Northern Ireland, Kilkeel, the picturesque crossroads village of Plumbridge, natural limestone caves in the picturesque foothills of Cuilcagh Mountain at Marble Arch Caves and a ruined castle and two ancient tombs known as the Druid's Altar and Todd's Den in Castlederg.”

Darren was easy to deal with, explained everything, always helpful on each occasion we spoke. Darren was my main contact but others I spoke with were equally good to deal with. If I wanted to lease in the future I would come back to this company.
