Now this is how you go out with a bang - the final Ford GT is an extreme, track-only supercar with a £1.4 million price tag.
As we reported in October, Ford is ceasing production of the achingly-gorgeous GT at the end of the year, with the car having first appeared in 2004.
The GT was, of course, famously styled on the GT40 endurance racer from the 1960s.
And Ford isn’t letting the modern GT bow out with a whimper.
The final model is this, the track-honed Mk IV. It’s a name that honours the original GT Mk IV race car from 1967 (below).
It features a specially engineered twin-turbo EcoBoost engine ‘targeting more than 800 horsepower’. It also gets race transmission, carbon fibre ‘long tail’ body, plus Multimatic’s Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) suspension set-up.
Ford says it represents the ‘ultimate and most extreme track only Ford GT ever’. There’s an uber-exclusive ‘client application’ process for anyone who wants one, and there’s also the hefty £1.4m price tag to negotiate.
Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsport, tells us:
“The original GT Mk IV held nothing back for max track performance, and the new Ford GT Mk IV brings it in the same way.
With an even higher-level of motorsport engineering and performance, plus a completely new carbon fibre body that is functional and striking, the Mk IV is the ultimate send-off of the third-generation supercar.”
If you’re looking for a GT you can drive on the road, you’ll have to go for the recently-revealed ‘LM Edition’ (above).
That car features a carbon fibre body, gloss carbon 20 inch wheels and Brembo brake callipers, Alcantara carbon seats, and power of 660 hp.
Only 20 versions of the LM Edition will be made, making that car also tricky to land.
Another option for prospective owners, in light of the GT’s demise, might be the Maserati MC20.
In a recent interview with Maserati specialists H.R. Owen Maserati London, our expert revealed how the Ford GT is ‘conceptually close’ to the MC20 - seeing as how they’re both packing a screaming V6 engine and a pair of turbochargers.
