If you like your cars sleek and very premium, but not large, then the Mercedes CLA should be on your to-look-at list. The same size as the A-Class hatchback, it’s available in stylish four-door coupe form or the more practical (but still very swish) CLA Shooting Brake estate. It’s got a fantastic interior and a choice of petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power, and there are some very fast performance models too.
The CLA is smaller than a lot of the Mercedes range, so prices will be attractive in comparison, although it’s still a premium car. The CLA puts style at the top of its appeal. An A-Class saloon is more practical, but it doesn’t have the distinctive coupe-like bodywork of the CLA. Nor is the A-Class available in the roomy but still-rakish Shooting Brake estate form. Both models have a choice of engines, from punchy and efficient petrol and diesels to a very efficient plug-in hybrid with a range of up to 43 miles on electric power alone. There are also two high-performance versions from Mercedes’ tuning division, AMG.
The CLA was reviewed and tested by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP in 2019 and was given the maximum five-star score, with great marks in adult, child and pedestrian safety tests. Lots of the latest safety features are included as standard across the range, and more are available on higher-spec models or as options. When it comes to practicality, the CLA four-door coupe is about the same size but slightly less roomy than an A-Class saloon, so that’s a better bet if you have adult rear passengers. The Shooting Brake is roomier though, and has a big 505-litre boot to carry about plenty of stuff.
There’s a wide selection of trim levels on the CLA. Once you’ve decided on coupe or Shooting Brake body styles, and a range of different engines, you’ll have three main trim levels to choose from. All are based on the entry-level AMG Line spec, which gives the CLA a sporty look both inside and out. It comes with big alloy wheels and a brilliant, high-tech infotainment system. The AMG Line Premium model adds a better sound system and some extra styling bits, while the AMG Line Premium Plus has a panoramic sunroof and clever multibeam LED headlights. Then there are the two four-wheel-drive AMG models; the AMG 35, which has three trim choices similar to the standard cars, and the AMG 45 S, which has just one, fully-loaded model.
