Ranger Platinum is Ford’s Posh Pickup

Ford is bringing a touch of luxury to the commercial vehicle world by introducing the Ranger Platinum pickup truck.

Powered by a 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, the Platinum model will top the Ranger lineup, sitting above the popular Wildtrak model that accounts for 60% of UK sales.

To stand out from the regular Rangers, the Platinum model — only available as a double cab five-seater model — receives a number of cosmetic upgrades. Most obvious is the chrome 'PLATINUM' text across the bonnet's leading edge, announcing the vehicle's arrival to those in front. This is complemented by a unique grille sitting between the signature C-clamp daytime running lights of the next-generation pickup.

Matrix LED headlights at the front and a soft close tailgate at the rear separate the Platinum from other specifications. Privacy glass darkens the rear of the cabin, and roof rails, side steps and a sports bar add a purposeful look and extra practicality. Some silk chrome highlights and unique 20-inch machined alloy wheels with high-gloss dark detailing add a final style flourish.

Step inside, and you’ll find perforated and quilted leather seats with contrast stitching behind a dashboard featuring opulent open-grained dark maple wood. The front seats get 10-way power adjustment, heating and cooling functions, while calming ambient lighting lifts the cabin.

The Platinum model borrows the next-generation Ranger’s high-tech cockpit, with a pair of 12-inch digital panels replacing much of the traditional dials and controls found in previous pickups. The driver’s instrument binnacle is a customisable display, with the vertically mounted infotainment screen in the centre console providing access to most of the Ranger’s features. Chief amongst those is an eight-speaker B&O sound system.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a DAB radio are included, allowing full smartphone connectivity. A wireless charging pad is provided to keep your phone topped up. The Sync 4A system also includes a standard FordPass Connect modem, enabling multiple vehicle modules to be updated over the air, future-proofing the Ford commercial vehicle.

Additional safety technology has been included in the Ranger Platinum. Building on what’s available on the Wildtrak, the Platinum gains park assist (which will help you park and leave a parking space), blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alert (both with trailer coverage), lane keeping alert and assistance, and a 360-degree camera.

A powerful 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine drives the Ranger Platinum. Already seen in the US-market Ford F-150 pickup, the UK version will deliver 240hp and a mammoth 600Nm of torque. That power goes through a 10-speed automatic transmission to Ford’s new electronically controlled full-time all-wheel drive system.

The gearbox has been recalibrated for comfort and refinement, but, despite that, the truck is built tough. Able to tow up to 3,500kg, it’ll also offer the same load-carrying ability as all Ranger pickups, with a payload exceeding one tonne.

Ford expects to start building the Ranger Platinum in March 2023, with the first customer deliveries coming soon after. With high residual values expected, lease rates should be surprisingly low, but cash buyers can order a truck for £44,400 plus VAT.

“The Ford Ranger has set the standard for performance, versatility and capability in the pickup segment, and now it’s setting the standard for luxury,” commented Hans Schep, general manager, Ford Pro Europe. “The stunning new Platinum will suit customers who appreciate the level of comfort and technology from high-end road cars, but who rely on the toughness and all-round productivity that consistently make Ranger Europe’s pickup sales leader.”
