The best vans for towing in 2021

5. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

Renowned as a fantastic large workhorse, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van also offers a car-like driving experience while featuring an abundance of driver-assistance tech and comfort perks across the range.

In standard guise a towing capacity of 2,000kg does not appear to pull up any trees, however Mercedes-Benz vans have thought this through and also offers numerous towing packages to increase the towing capacity of the Sprinter van should you require that bit more oomph.

A highlight of these options is trailer coupling, which increases the towing capacity to 3,500kg for an additional cost of £2155. This is a good option if you are looking for a luxurious and refined large van with all the latest tech while also requiring a significant towing capacity.

4. Volkswagen Crafter

The Volkswagen Crafter shares a lot in common with the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, with the two large vans having once shared the same platform and also having rolled off the same production line in Germany. But the two grafters went their separate ways in 2017.

And the VW Crafter van has established itself as one of the highest quality large vans going, while also offering some of the best carrying capacities in the segment.

The smaller front-wheel-drive VW Crafter van offers a 2,500kg towing capacity. But if you buy the larger 3.5-tonne version of the Crafter this then increases to 3,000kg. However, you will need to choose a five-tonne model before you reach that magic towing capacity mark of 3,500kg.

3. MAN TGE

The MAN TGE is built alongside the Volkswagen Crafter, so you would expect towing capacities to be identical - and they are pretty similar. Which is good news if your business relies on you hauling heavy loads.

You get a braked towing capacity of either 2,500kg or 3,000kg, depending on whether you go for the front wheel drive or all wheel drive model. And if you plump for the rear-wheel drive version, the towing capacity increases to 3,500kg.

2. Iveco Daily

Besides vans, Iveco also builds reliable, heavy-duty trucks and lorries. And when Iveco transfers that know-how to light commercial vehicles, you can expect a pretty robust workhorse. The Iveco Daily is certainly that and is even built on truck underpinnings, with models weighing up to 7.2 tonnes.

As you may expect considering all of this, the Iveco Daily can tow 3,500kg.

1. Ford Transit

The brilliant and long-running Ford Transit is one of the most familiar sights on Britain’s roads and also an incredibly popular van for a host of different trades and businesses. And the latest Transit van also benefits from updated styling, new safety kit and an increased payload of up to 2,383kg - if you opt for the colossal new 5.0 Tonne Transit.

One area the Ford Transit van has always been incredibly strong is towing; however, to benefit from the maximum 3,500kg towing capacity you will have to opt for the range topping engines and rear-wheel drive. Choose the 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine with either 170ps or 185ps outputs to get the best vans for towing.

And you can expect a towing capacity of up to 3,600 kg.
