BMW Reveal Details of all-new X1

Author: Christian Storm     Date: 04-06-2015

The Frankfurt Motor Show is now just weeks away but BMW are just too excited about their fresh new X1 model to delay it’s unveiling till then. The vehicle has been touted as an early rival to the successful Audi Q3 and even Range Rover’s Evoque ; early information is encouraging enough to suggest it could do just that.

The vehicle has been uncovered with a host of new details following it’s initial reveal. With a strikingly attractive new appearance and strongly competitive set of engines, it’s certainly going to result in a few turning heads at one of the world's premier motoring events.

Starting with the design, there have been a number of key changes to put the X1 more in-line with it’s soft-edged competition. It’s still very clearly an X1, but the changes are likely to offer a significant improvement to it’s bodystyle. It’s 53mm taller and 21mm wider than the original vehicle meaning, yes, there’s far more room in what has become a cavernous interior. The boot had also come in for a bit of flak, deserved or not, for it’s size but that’s been upped to a highly commendable 505-litres. We’re also told legroom is one of the roomiest in the class.

BMW have a lot to shout about with the X1 when it comes to engines. Firstly, the claimed efficiency is apparently 17% better than the previous X1, with a touted range between 109 and 149g/km. There are a total of three diesels and two petrols offered as standard choices. The diesels are probably the better bet for emissions, starting at 148bhp they finish at a powerful 228bhp which should give the vehicle that much needed oomph that perhaps it has been criticized for lacking over the years. The xDrive25i, the X1s fastest engine does a power-smashing 0-62mph in just 6.5 seconds.

The X1 is not short when it comes to technology and equipment the vehicle has a raft of standard features that will propel it into the top bracket of vehicles when it comes to high-tech systems. For instance, USB Connectivity, sat-nav and BMW Head-Up Display are all thrown in for your pleasure. The standard models will have to settle with a six-speed gearbox but everything else has an eight-speed automatic allowing for extremely smooth transmission.

When it comes to safety BMW have built a fantastic reputation over the years and that looks unlikely to change in the latest iteration of the X1. Driving Assistant Plus will provide top-notch systems such as Traffic Jam Assistance, Collision Warning, emergency braking, lane departure warning and Active Cruise Control.

We’ll see more on the X1 at Frankfurt from July onwards, but until then we expect a steady trickle of information until we actually get see the vehicle in all it’s glory.
