We have all the details of UK’s best selling cars of 2016 where the small hatchbacks were once again the most popular cars in the country & the Nissan Qashqai continues to grow in popularity and secure its position in UK’s top 10 bestselling cars of 2016.

Despite all the ups and down in the automotive industry in 2016 including Volkswagen’s diesel scandal, Brexit, VED Changes rule etc.

According to SMMT, 2016 was still the best year to date in the British automotive industry. A total of 2.7 million cars were registered last year this is compared to 2015 registration figures of 2,692,786 making a growth of 2.3 percent in total on last year.

In regards to fuel, petrol enjoyed 49% of the market share and diesel sat at 47.7% and alternative fuelled vehicles at 3.3%. Fuel vehicle registrations experienced a strong uplift in demand with increased shares of 22.2% across the year.

Diesel and petrol cars continued to be by far the most popular fuel types for consumers with a market share at 47.7% and 49.0% respectively. However, alternatively fuelled vehicles (AFVs) experienced a strong uplift in demand, up 22.2% across the year. Plug-in hybrids and petrol electric hybrids, in particular, experienced significant growth, with demand up 41.9% and 25.1% respectively. Meanwhile, more than 10,000 motorists chose to go fully electric in 2016 – up 3.3% on 2015.

As was expected, 2016 sales figures prove that small hatchbacks are UK’s most favourite cars to drive.

FORD FIESTA BEST SELLING CAR

Once again, the Ford Fiesta secured its first position in the UK’s bestselling list. The Fiesta ‘s great range of abilities are well known and it is comfortably one of the best cars to drive with good looks, brilliant driving capabilities and affordability.

However, we can’t neglect the Vauxhall Corsa which is a British built car and continues to secure its second position in the list from many years and is one of the UK’s most respectable cars to drive!

The Nissan Qashqai also made the top ten and continues to be one of the best SUVs to drive. The 62,000+ Qashqai’s sold is a great sign of how popular the vehicle has become in the UK.

In the Saloon executive market, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class is hard to beat, and continues to rise the list thanks to its high quality, upmarket interior, economical engines and comfortable ride. The C-Class is one of the best executive car choices for both personal and fleet users.

In the luxury market, Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, Infiniti and Mercedes-Benz have all benefited from a good number of sales, whereas on the other hand Volkswagen’s sales were down by 7.49% however VW still have sold more than 200,000 cars last year. Smart sales were increased a staggering 42% as UK buyers choose their small city cars.

Overall buyers were attracted by a range of new models and attractive finance deals plus the fleet played an important role for most of the growth, with a demand recorded of 1.38 million units.

Important facts to know:

1.7 million cars built in the UK in 2016, an increase of 8.5% and the highest output for 17 years. The overall growth was strong across a number of markets where the EU shares almost half followed by US, China, Turkey, Australia, Japan and Canada. The Nissan Qashqai was also one of the most exported cars of 2016.

Even in the van industry, light commercial vehicle market registrations market rose 1% to 375,867 units in 2016. Pick-up buyers have also increased with 47,715 last year which shows an uplift of 17.6%

Overall, the biggest growth was noted in the Pickup sector which showed clear signs of business growth for light commercial vehicles.
