Best SUV on the market? 2016 VW Tiguan

Author: Select Car Leasing News     Date: 18-07-2016

Volkswagen have bolstered their already strong range of cars with a new & improved VW Tiguan. The Tiguan, in comparison to other cars in the manufacturers range such as the Polo & Golf, is a relatively new vehicle. First arriving on the scene in 2007 it has quickly established itself as one of the premier SUVs on the market and will play a huge part in Volkswagen's wider push of this sector in the next couple of years - a line of SUVs are set to be unveiled from the German brand in the near future.

There are four trims to choose from in the new Tiguan; S, SE, SEL & R-Line. The higher up the trim levels you go, the more you'll need to pay but of course going to R-Line comes with numerous benefits not just the obvious exterior style changes. For instance, even the SEL will give you interior additions such as a Panaromic roof and ambient lighting adding to the Tiguan experience.

EXTERIOR

The Tiguan's main rivals come in the form of Nissan's award-winning Qashqai, the Kia Sportage & perhaps even Mazda's CX-5. With this in mind there is an added focus on a sportier style that VW are trying to promote in the Tiguan. The new MQB platform the Tiguan sits on ensures upto 50kg in weight has been shed and with a smart chrome grille, slimmed down headlights and a sharper appearance on the road the Tiguan is set to be a highly successful SUV.

INTERIOR

VW's greater emphasis on providing higher-spec interiors has definitely found its way to the comfortable, practical and high-quality Tiguan cabin design.  A number of features have been carried through from the old model and there is an optional TFT instrument cluster, a simple uncomplicated dashboard layout and head up display. The plastics and interior are generally of good quality and unsurprisingly there are plenty of optional extras such as the 12.3-inch Active Info Display which will, at your request, change into a high-definition sat-nav screen. VW have been championing in it for a while now and it does look to be one of the better optional extras you can kit your Tiguan out with.

The SUV market will ultimately be won and lost in the practicality department and the Tiguan will definitely benefit from increasing its boot size to around 520-litres (50-litres larger than the outgoing model). If you fold down the rear seats this will go all the way to 615-litres. There is good height and legroom as well, with plenty of space for three adults to sit comfortably in the back.

ENGINES

While the engine range is not exactly bursting with choices there is enough for most drivers in the UK. There is a single petrol engine available - a 180bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged version which will give you around 38mpg in terms of economy and go from 0-62mph in an impressive 7.7 seconds.

The flagship diesel model is the 2.0-litre which produces around 148bhp and will reportedly do a healthy 59mpg. Its a good choice that should cater for most motorists needs and even adding in four-wheel-drive & the DSG gearbox doesn't compromise the MPG too significantly. Its likely to make up the bulk of Tiguan sales.

SAFETY

There are a number of standard safety features in the new Tiguan including Lane Keep Assist & autonomous city braking. Upgrading your trim level will be reflected in the amount of standard equipment you benefit from and what additional options you can add such as adaptive cruise control, Trailer Assist, Rear-View Camera and a blind-spot warning system.
