Charging an Electric Vehicle
Working out where to charge your electric vehicle – and when – is a bit of a minefield. Read our comprehensive Charging Guide covering the best approach for home and work charging, plus what to do when out and about.
You’ve decided to lease an electric vehicle, and you’ve got space to charge at home or at work. Next step? Get a dedicated EV charging point installed!
We’ve teamed up with charger specialists, Rightcharge, to bring you a wide selection of high-quality EV chargers at great prices.
Rightcharge has developed a unique platform to help you compare EV chargers and find a fully-qualified, local installer at a great price.
The many benefits of using Rightcharge include:
The cost of a charger and standard installation is typically between £800 and £1,100, including VAT, depending on the model you choose.
The Rightcharge platform automatically keeps prices as low as possible, while still maintaining excellent service levels. Vetted local installers win business by combining keen pricing with high installation standards.
Rightcharge are continually evaluating the latest charging points and incorporate new ones onto the platform if they tick the right boxes in terms of performance and features.
Prefer to pay in instalments? Rightcharge can also help with that – just pick the Smart Pro Plan from Egg and get your first 12 months' service and maintenance for free!
Rightcharge and Select want to provide our customers with maximum peace of mind when going ahead with an EV charger installation.
No matter the reason why, you can cancel or reschedule your installation prior to 2 calendar days before your installation date, free of charge.*
In addition, in the unlikely event that your installation doesn't meet the required standards, let Rightcharge know within 10 days after your installation, and they'll hold your funds until you receive a level of workmanship which is expected by Rightcharge (check Rightcharge Terms and Conditions for more details).*
These strong consumer protection features – an integral part of the Rightcharge platform – mean that installers are motivated to go the extra mile to provide a fantastic service.
* The only exception to the payment, rescheduling and cancellation policies is if you opt to pay in instalments via the Smart Pro Plan provided by Egg.
Get help in choosing the right EV charger
All of the chargers on the platform are modern and up-to-date, bringing you the convenience of fast charging at home.
But you can go beyond the basics and pick a charger tailored precisely to your specific needs.
For example, Rightcharge's comparison tool will ask you:
Once you’ve leased either a fully electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle with Select Car Leasing, you will be sent a link – exclusive for Select customers – to a bespoke version of the Rightcharge website.
You are then just 5 simple steps away from getting your charger on the wall:
Can’t I charge my vehicle using a standard 3-pin socket?
It is true that technically you don’t need to get a dedicated EV charging point installed. You can use a humble 3-pin socket that we all have at home. To do this, you will need a 3-pin charging cable – some vehicles come with them, some don’t.
However, there are pros and cons of 3-pin plug charging as follows:
Charger type | 3-pin Socket | Dedicated EV Charger |
Charging rate | 2.3 kW | 7.4 kW |
Vehicle charge time* | 19 hrs 34 mins | 6 hrs 5 mins |
Designed to run at maximum rate for long periods? | No | Yes |
Cost? | £0** | £800 to £1,200, typically |
* Assuming a 50 kWh battery, from 10% to 100%.
** If your vehicle comes with a free 3-pin plug charger cable. If not, you'll have to buy one.
In summary: It's quicker and safer to charge your electric vehicle with a professionally installed charge point.
Annoyingly, electric vehicle manufacturers don't put the car charging port in the same location for every model.
For example, the Nissan Leaf and MG ZS EV put the port at the front of the car. By contrast, Tesla's charging ports are at the back on the left. The Audi e-tron has two ports: one front left, the other front right.
So when you come to have a charging point installed, think carefully about where the charging point will be located, to ensure it's not too far from your car's charging port.
In any case, your Rightcharge installer will make sure your charge point is suitably sited for your EV.
