Not only does it boast Tesla’s slick trademark styling and futuristic interior, as a spacious SUV crossover there’s also room inside for up to 5 people.
And when you combine those attributes with a range between charges of up to 315 miles, it’s a worthy adversary to rivals such as the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the Volkswagen ID.4.
The Model Y slots into the Tesla range between the Model 3 and Model S in terms of affordability, and is considerably cheaper than the Model X SUV.
There are two variants up for grabs - the base ‘Long Range’ and the more powerful ‘Performance’. Both versions use the same powertrain and a 82kWh battery pack, they just differ in how that power is actually used.
The Long Range has 346 bhp and 510Nm of torque, which translates to a 0-60mph time of 4.8 seconds and means the Y can sprint on to a top speed of 135mph. The maximum range for the Long Range is around 315 miles. The quicker Performance, meanwhile, takes the power up to 483 bhp and brings the 0-60 mph acceleration time down to just 3.5 seconds.
The cabin boasts a 15-inch touch screen, an immersive sound system and a glass roof to give those panoramic views.
And the Model Y should also be the safest car in its class, coming with a ‘low center of gravity, rigid body structure and large crumple zones’ which ‘provide unparalleled protection’, says Tesla. It also comes with the optional extra to allow for Full Self-Driving capability - ‘enabling automatic driving on city streets and highways’ - should such tech ever be allowed on UK roads.
