Both SEAT and Volkswagen come under the umbrella of the wider Volkswagen Group, and so the Leon and the VW Golf share much in common, including the vehicle platform and range of engines.

The SEAT Leon has been a fixture of UK roads since it was first launched in 1999. Now, some four generations later, the Leon remains one of the most desirable cars in its class.
The SEAT Leon and Volkswagen Golf are closely related. Both vehicles share the Volkswagen Group’s ‘MQB’ platform, as does the Audi A3, and the available engines are replicated across the models.
Where the Leon differs, however, is with its exterior styling, which can be viewed as more youthful and vibrant compared with the Golf.
If you want a performance Leon, you’ll need to look to the Spanish brand’s CUPRA division, where you can enjoy power of up to 300 PS with the CUPRA Leon.
Most customers who lease a SEAT Leon will be looking for a sensible alternative to the Volkswagen Golf, but one that still boasts plenty of road presence. The Leon is also the larger of SEAT’s two hatchbacks, boasting more interior space than the smaller SEAT Ibiza.
One of the big appeals of the Leon, like the Golf, is that it’s available to lease with a plug-in hybrid powertrain - a huge consideration if you’re a company car driver looking to lower your Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax burden.
The plug-in hybrid SEAT Leon offers a range of up to 40 miles using electricity alone as well as power of 204 PS, which is enough to accelerate the hatch from 0-62mph in 7.5 seconds.
The SEAT Leon also comes with a generous 380-litre boot, which is larger than you get with rivals like the Mazda3 hatchback.
There are 1.0-litre and 1.5-litre ‘EVO’ petrol engines that have power of between 110 PS and 150 PS.
The SEAT Leon’s mild-hybrid engines are called ‘eTSI’, and again have power of between 110 PS and 150 PS
The Leon’s plug-in hybrid powertrain is referred to as ‘eHybrid’, and is available on the range-topping FR and FR Sport trims.
The latest Leon is a properly attractive car. Where it was once bulbous and fluffy, it’s now sharp, angular and edgy, while we particularly like the purposeful rear end.
