The X1 promises all the appeal of larger, more expensive BMWs in a compact size. That means a great driving experience, a top-quality interior and, considering its diminutive proportions, impressive practicality. Four adults will have no trouble fitting in, and there’s a big enough boot for their luggage too. Meanwhile, a range of efficient but punchy petrol and diesel engines are available, or for those that want to really cut their fuel use, a plug-in hybrid model can run for more than 30 miles per battery charge on electric power alone.
The X1 was given the maximum five-star score by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP, although it should be mentioned that it was back in 2015, and standards have moved on a bit since then. Still, the X1 comes with plenty of standard safety features, including automatic emergency braking, which will intervene if you don’t react to an impending collision. When it comes to practicality, BMW has engineered lots of space into the X1’s small size, with an automatic boot lid on all models, a seriously large boot compared to rivals and lots of headroom and legroom in the back seats. Some models let you fold down the front passenger seat as well as the rear seats, which gives you loads of load-lugging capability. That could be very handy for those flat-pack furniture purchases.
There’s a good choice of different models in the X1 range, with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid power and two or four-wheel drive. When it comes to trim levels, the range starts with the SE, featuring 17-inch alloy wheels and LED headlights, as well as parking sensors front and rear. Next up is Sport, which has sports seats and 18-inch wheels, and X-Line, which adds leather seats and some extra styling features. M Sport has a racier vibe, with a bodykit and lowered, stiffer suspension for nippier handling. If you’re after the X1’s practicality with a bit more visual zing, check out the very similar X2, which loses a bit of interior space in favour of a more swish look.
